Just like any other successful enterprise, there’s always an interesting story to tell for each. Pizza Hut - the largest and the most successful pizza restaurant chain in the world - certainly has one of its own.

 

In short, in 1958, two college students from Wichita, Kansas, were approached by a family friend about opening a pizza parlor in their neighborhood.  Running a pizza business back then was still relatively fresh in America, but the two brothers saw the potential and decided to give it a try. So they borrowed US$600 from their mother as a start-up capital. They then rented a small building located in a busy district and started selling pizzas. But little did they know Pizza Hut would become a world-known brand for pizzas, pasta and many gourmet delights after half a century later.  

 

How the name Pizza Hut came about was nothing more than a coincidence. As the length of the restaurant signboard was good for 9 characters only, and the two brothers wanted to use “Pizza” in the name, so they decided to fill up the 3 letters room with “Hut” to tie in with the looks of the building where their first “Pizza Hut” was established

Our Story – 30 Years of Great Taste

 

1981 1st Pizza Hut restaurant was opened in Tsim Sha Tsui East. In the past 30 years, the restaurant chain has grown into a total of 80 outlets across Hong Kong and Macau.
1987 Jardine Matheson & Co. Ltd. took over the Hong Kong Pizza Hut franchise business.
1989 1st Pizza Hut restaurant in Macau was opened at Hotel Lisboa. Today there are a total of five outlets in Macau.
1992 1st Delivery Service Store was opened. It was a new business concept then and today Pizza Hut has the largest delivery team in Hong Kong.
2005 1st restaurant chain in Hong Kong that introduced one single hotline of 31800000 for delivery service.
2006 1st restaurant chain to offer delivery service on the Internet.
2010 Launched iPhone Apps, 1st mobile phone food ordering through Apps in Hong Kong. It won Top 10 Award from “2011 Hong Kong Marketing Smartphone Apps Popularity Contest”.
2011 Pizza Hut is successfully leaped to its 30th Year Anniversary. The company again won “The Service and Courtesy Award” for 17 consecutive years, organized by Hong Kong Retail Management Association.

1) Pizza Card Points Rewards Donation

 

Beneficiaries: Mindset/St. James’ Settlement People’s Food Bank

 

For every $5 purchase at any Pizza Hut restaurant, takeaway or delivery service, the customer could earn 1 Pizza Card Points Rewards. However, the customer was encouraged to donate the points, a minimum of 50 points, in exchange of $5 to the beneficiaries.

 

2) Regular Donation

 

Beneficiaries: Mindset/World Food Programme (WFP)

 

Each year Pizza Hut would conceive different fundraising programmes for Mindset/World Food Programme and invite its customers to participate, so that while enjoying delicious meals they can join hands to help the needy.

 

Charitable organizations

 

Mindset – a Hong Kong registered charity and was established by Jardine Matheson Group in 2002. It aims to raise awareness and concern for the people suffering from mental illnesses and to provide assistance for the individuals and their families who are in need of help.

 

St James’ Settlement People’s Food Bank – a registered local charity organization which started the People’s Canteen Service since December 2003. Its objective is to offer free food assistance, as well as other services such as food market and nutrition programme to help the needs of the disadvantaged people. 

 

United Nations’ World Food Programme – the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries.

 

3) Participate in Charity Programmes

 

As a member of Jardine Matheson & Co. Ltd., Pizza Hut always takes pleasure to participate in various charity programmes and help the needy.

 

4) Employment of Physically Challenged Employees

 

Apart from fulfilling our share of corporate social responsibility, we also stress the importance of offering equal employment opportunities no matter race or people with physically challenged. Each year, Pizza Hut would employ around 100 physically challenged people and these positions ranging from being a team member to supervisory level. We have a long service physically challenged staff who has been with us for around 15 years.
